Companion costs nothing today, and “free” here means the whole product — not a tier with the good parts removed. You supply an OpenRouter key and pay your model provider directly, at what it actually costs, with nothing added by us.
What free means here
The whole thing, on your own key.
There is no paid tier above this that unlocks the real product. What you download is what we build.
You will pay someone — just not us. The model call goes to the provider you chose and is billed to your account. We measured what that comes to across 1,838 real exchanges, because a pricing page that hides the bill you WILL get is the omission that has cost other vendors in this category a public apology.

The reasoning
Why there is no meter.
Most AI subscriptions are a bet by the vendor that you will not use the thing very much. That bet shapes the product you get: the caps, the throttling, the quiet downgrade at the busy hour, the plan that resets on a schedule you have to think about.
We are not able to make that bet, because we are not buying your inference. Whether you send four messages this month or four thousand, our cost is identical — so there is nothing to meter and no reason to ration you. That is a structural fact about how Companion is built rather than a promise we are making, which is the only reason it is worth anything to you.
Said plainly
Your model spend is yours, on your own key, and it never crosses our wire.
We would rather print that next to the word “free” than have you discover it after you have installed.
What this costs you
Two things, and they are both true today.
- The local product is free.The thing that runs on your machine, on your own key, costs nothing — with no turn limit, no token allowance and no feature held back for a tier that does not exist.
- Your data leaves with you.Conversations, memory graph and event log export in open formats at any time. Everything the product needs to work is already on your disk, which is what makes that easy to promise.
Try it on something you could not paste anywhere else.
That is the only test that matters, and it costs nothing.
